Mater Dei 2017 NPOY and SC Trojan QB JT Daniels is out for the season with a torn ACL and meniscus suffered last night on a first half sack against Fresno State. Freakish twist of fate (and the knee) for JT and the Trojans, who were rolling to start the game in their new Air Raid offense. A VERY BAD TURN for Hot Seat Head Coach Clay Helton. That’s horrible for JT, and just everyone involved.
It might open the figurative “portal” door for a return to Troy by former San Clemente state champion QB and backup Jack Sears, who announced his entry into the transfer portal after being named 4th string last week, behind true freshman Kedon Slovis and senior Matt Fink. Fink entered the portal earlier in the offseason, and was set to transfer to Illinois before returning to SC. Sears left the door open for a return in announcing his transfer, and is reportedly close with JT.
Although Slovis is slated to start this week v. Stanford, there is no guarantee he will start going forward, and the Trojans will certainly need more than 2 scholarship QBs on the roster for the rest of this season. And if Sears returns and continues to compete, there’s no reason he couldn’t eventually win the job outright. It’s a long season, and it’s looking like it could be a REALLY long year for the Trojans.
With Stanford, at BYU, Utah, at Washington and at Notre Dame as the next several games on the schedule, and Helton’s seat in flames, he would certainly welcome Sears back with a bear hug.
