Trinity Lg Football 2019 - Round 3

Postby RedPillWonderland » Thu Oct 17, 2019 10:56 am

Big game tonight to kick off Round 3 of TL play.

Pat Harlow’s JSerra Lions travel to Orange Coast to take on T-Bone’s Servite Friars. 7:30 pm kick (odd for a Thursday).

This game is likely for 3rd Place, unless OLu or SM pull an upset in the coming weeks. Also big implications for playoff positioning. JSerra trying to bounce back from a 39-point beatdown at home by Bosco, while Servite licks its wounds from a 45-point loss to arch rival MD.

This should be a close game, as both teams have some complementary strengths and deficiencies.

Both teams tonight should be at full strength or close to it. Didn’t see any injuries in either of their games last week.

Heard a murmur that Jake Overman for Servite (DE/TE) was/is injured, but not sure of the status there.

If you know of any kids that will be out, speak up. Hopefully both teams are at full strength and ready to get the bad taste out of their collective mouths tonight.

Side note: does anyone know why Servite is sharing OCC with OLu this year as it’s home field? What happened to Cerritos? Rent go up? Bagpipe restrictions?

Overman is out for a while. Cerritos was about money. OCC is a better venue to watch a game anyway.

JSerra currently 5th ranked in CIF D1 and Servite #6. No way Servite can stay in the top 8 if they fall to 0-3 in league, right? I know some have predicted otherwise in the D1 playoff thread, but even with a close loss tonight, would that not seal Servite’s fate as a Division 2 playoff team?

Is that not a better placement for a young team like Servite, having a realistic chance to win a CIF title instead of ending the season in a blowout loss, even if it would be kind of a “JV Trophy” in comparison to D1?

JSerra has had a weird season. They’ve got double digit wins over a now 6-3 Salt Lake City East team on the road, and a 5-2 Calabasas team with Power 5 talent galore. They also gave a 6-1 Amat team it’s only loss, 38-14, and gutted out a Trinity Classic win over defending Georgia 7A state champ Milton when Malaki Teo turned into Superman (I can testify).

But they also threw away (literally) a game against St Joes Regional from New Jersey, and gave up 7 consecutive TDs to Bosco last week after scoring on their opening possession (thanks mostly to an 80+ yard return on the opening kick by Sammy Green). They also scored 1 touchdown in the first half against TL doormat SM.

Can JSerra’s offense wake up and perform this week? Is OC Eric Rescigno on the hot seat down the stretch of the season? Should he be?

Has anyone seen Cal commit Chris Street? Did he enroll early at Berkeley? Is Keyan Burnett in the witness protection program with Chad Johnson? Can Sammy Green get some more touches? How about Earnest McDaniel? Is that line really as physical and tough as Harlow talked about? Who will start at QB this week for the Lions, Booty or Phillips? Who will finish? If it’s Booty, where is his head at? Will they rotate? Can they complete 5 passes in this game? How about a deep ball or three?

Can the defense bounce back after last week? Will Malaki Teo, Jaden Genova and Siale Suliafu be able to get pressure on Noah Fifita all night like MD did? Will star safety New Zealand Williams be able to plug all the holes in that JSerra secondary, facing off against TMac, Centers, Moon and Avinger?

If the Lions lose this one with talent and experience advantages in key positions (not QB), I think it’s fair to question whether they will ever take the next step in the League under Harlow.

Can Servite’s defense recover from getting shish-kabobbed by Bryce Young and Co. last week and losing all traces of composure under the crushing weight of humiliation?

Can Troy Thomas get his kids back in line and playing with discipline and not fake toughness?

Will we see the defense that sacked DJ Uiagalelei on the first play of the game and was in his face frequently with kids like Tristen Wilson and Maxx Silao? Or the defense that bent over and gave up the tail early against the Monarchs, despite playing its safeties 30 yards off the ball?

Will any of that even matter if Fifita and the offense put up at least 30 points?

Will Servite’s special teams re-emerge in this one and make a big play in a key moment? Will the ugly side of Servite’s special teams make a blunder in a key moment (missed EPS?)?

I think this game could come down to whether JSerra can pressure Fifita effectively against that Servite OL that struggled against Gorman and MD but protected well against Bosco. If Fifita is cooking biscuits back there in the pocket and dealing to TMac and those WRs, it probably means the Friars win.

I doubt Servite has forgotten last years 49-6 a$$ whipping suffered at the hands of the Lions.

USC offers don't mean as much these days. Though I see a lot of people acting like its the gold standard offer.. Not anymore. Cal is a good fit for him.

Maybe this is why the game was moved back to a 7:30 kick:

Have to admit, the Servite hype video for this week is top shelf. Even if most of the clips are from a 45-point loss to an arch rival lol

Here at OCC, both teams in warmups. About 40m to kick.

Michigan bound JSerra OT Jeff Persi is in street clothes and out tonight. That’s a big deal and a big loss for Lions. Cathedral Catholic transfer and suspension sit out Ross Maseuli is a BIG BOY. Harlow could have used him this year. Lions OL is still huge. We’ll see if they can move the ball tonight.

Booty taking reps with the 1s.

Both teams looking focused tonight, a lot on the line. No disrespect as they pass each other to leave the field. T-Bone is indeed here and looks ready to go lol

Announcer just welcomed Sondy to OC, and said hello to Dan Albano too lol
