You mean DJ in 2016? Bishop Gorman was consensus #1 that year I think

Instead of Open make it "top" division then, whatever the nomenclature...does that widen the field?

Considering three guys have done it in the seven years it's been around, I'd say it widens the field in your favor by going from seven years to about 108.

Not really...how many CA teams in that 108 were Nat'l Champs? I don't think there even was such thing at the HS level until very recently.

Didn't look it up, off the top of my head I'm guessing LB Poly, De La Salle, MD, Bosco, and...who am I forgetting?

A lot more. The national championship has been around in some form or another since the early 1900s. USA Today has been around since about 1980. You're missing Loyola, San Diego, Fontana, and Vallejo for sure. I can't name any others.

1) The system is still fraught with politics, but anything pre-USAToday is a stretch, IMHO...too few people doing the deciding

2) San Diego?

Well, when you inevitably have a dozen or more undefeated teams out 15,000 that start the season and they're spread thousands of miles apart and many times don't even have common opponents, that will be the case. The national championship is still a stretch most years.

Loyola? In 30 years people will probably be asking "De La Salle?".

I meant what was the name of the HS in SD? Is/was there a "San Diego High School"?

1966 El Rancho...whoa, memories. As a young tyke I was one of 33,374 witnesses attending the Anaheim vs. Mater Dei AAAA semifinal on Dec. 9, 1966 at brand-spanking new Anaheim Stadium. My big bro was on the field but didn't get in the game. MD was 11-0 and defending CIF champs but lost to Clare Van Hoorebeke's Colonists 12-7. That was a huuuuge deal at the time...

If you have to ask maybe you shoulda been here to water and weed...

Anyway, it's kinda moot since they're both (BY & DJ) gonna be continuing the debate in college \:D/

BTW, is Garbers a lock for the Huskies?

interesting regarding DLS, according to Wikipedia, they have won it 7 times, I guess when they mean 7 for them, they mean unanimous, as in ranked number 1 in every poll, I know it will always be shocking and raise eyebrows for me and tons of others, that LB Poly has never done it even once in their entire history, like c'mon, not even just once despite having a very rich history and having sent more players to the NFL than any other H.S. in the country.

But I know that has already been discussed.

But speaking of that, I wanted to add something about LB Poly that hit my mind, correct me if i'm wrong, but in the 1997 CIF D-1 Finals, when Poly beat MD 28-25, wasn't MD still ranked number 1 in the Nation heading into that game?, still retaining the rank from their 1996 season? Since Poly beat MD in the 1997 Finals, shouldn't have Poly at least finished number 1 in the Nation at least in one poll?
