Democrats have lost their damn minds

Post by John Q. Public »

James Carville's been making the rounds lately. Here's an outstanding interview he did with Vox. Too much meat in it to quote, so here are some bullet points:
 • Get off open borders, decriminalizing illegal immigration, prisoners voting, and doing away with nuclear energy and fracking. Progressives care about those, nobody else does;
 • Democrats need to frame, explain, repeat and deliver a coherent message focused on issues that affect (all) people's daily lives. Donald cut taxes for the rich and now Republicans are going after Medicare to pay for it. Yuge issue;
 • Bernie is a self-proclaimed socialist, whether he's a textbook one or not. The word is poison to most Americans. Nominating a socialist is handing Trump and Republican Senate candidates victories;
 • The Democratic Party is the party of African-Americans, Latinos, immigrants, women and educated suburbanites. Those people have lives to lead, kids to raise and parents to care for. Open borders and letting prisoners vote aren't on their lists;
 • "Free" college and student debt forgiveness are losers - just listen to the large number of people complaining about them. They appeal to young people but young people aren't reliable voters;
 • Democrats have to LISTEN to what the people are saying. All of the people, not just their base. They'll never get swing voters or form a governing coalition without that;
 • Ditch the "urbanist" mindset and stop looking down at the "bumpkin" Trump supporters. Eighteen percent of the population controls 52% of the Senate. You'll never get the Senate back by telling those people they're stupid;
 • "You can curse the darkness or light a candle." Inspire people - even the "bumpkins" - and they will follow.

My list of three

Trump is a criminal, surrounded himself with criminals, is doing or will do something worse.
The GOP House, Senate and Executives are all apart the cover-up.
Defend the programs that Trump is attacking.

To inspire you need to connect.... and that takes talent.

“Open borders” is just a republican buzz word and scare tactic. I’ve not heard a single dem say they want open borders.

Ok, maybe Keith Ellison but that’s it.

"Inspire people - even the "bumpkins"

Ya. Insulting millions of people worked out well in 2016. \:D/

The rest of it is spot on.

But when you say there are millions of bumpkins, that's not insulting...OK

Here's a question for you...

What adjective would you use to describe people who are so easily emotionally manipulated into voting directly against their own self-interest that they never even have a clue it happened?

Not really. What it does take, though, is a commitment and a willingness to listen, like when Warren drove an hour to a town hall in Coal Country. The people aren't likely to vote for her but she left them with a good feeling about "that Democrat lady." That could help her later and it probably helped Manchin, as well.

Well, twice in the OP:

"Ditch the "urbanist" mindset and stop looking down at the "bumpkin" Trump supporters."

"Inspire people - even the "bumpkins" - and they will follow."

Context and the quotation marks say otherwise. I thought that was pretty clear.

Indeed...sandwiched right between the two references is "You'll never get the Senate back by telling those people they're stupid"

The ghosts of the small-state delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 are probably twerking in...well, wherever they are

"The delegates to the Constitutional Convention did not represent a cross-section of 1787 America. The Convention included no women, no slaves, no Native Americans or racial minorites, no laborers. As one historian noted, it was a "Convention of the well-bred, the well-fed, the well-read, and the well-wed.""

Eighteen percent of the population controls 52% of the Senate

And 250 years later their "compromise" solution is still paying dividends #-o

Shocking that they restricted it to people who could read and write. Other than maybe a few members of racial minorities working for New York exporters and a few of the delegates' wives, odds are that in 1787 almost no one in any of those other groups could even sign their name.

Again, the "country" was formed as a union of states. It's more similar to the EU than it is to Germany. Article I of the Constitution set out the House of the People and the House of the States. Making the Senate proportional to population would give us two Houses of Representatives. That's not how it's supposed to work or how it should work.

But hey, we could always get 2/3 of both houses and 2/3 of all of the states to agree to take power away from 82% of the states.

Or Democrats could try and find some common ground with swayable Republican voters and flip 3 seats.

Those 2/3 thresholds you cite used to be the standard in the Senate as well. Now that it's just 50 + the VP for pretty much everything except throwing out the prez (funny how that works) maybe they need to be addressed too...

Just for the sake of sport, ya'll gotta love tonites spar between an Elite Billionaire (Buying his nomination) and a self acclaimed Democratic Socialist (Well whom is a MILLIONAIRE and has THREE houses!) ROFL

"I don't think there's any chance of the senator beating President Trump," Bloomberg responded flatly.

He would go on to slam communism, saying Sanders' apparent disdain for capitalism would lead to it and be catastrophic for Democrats in November. Sanders called the "communism" reference a "cheap shot," insisting that he is accurately described as a democratic socialist.

"What a wonderful country we have!" Bloomberg said. "The best-known socialist in the country happens to be a millionaire with three houses. What’d I miss here?”

“I work in Washington," Sanders began.

"That's the first problem," Bloomberg retorted.
