Facebook Oversight Board upholds Trump's suspension

Post by John Q. Public »

To the extent that an advisory board can do that. It also criticized Facebook's wishy-washy response.

Key findings

The Board found that the two posts by Mr. Trump on January 6 severely violated Facebook’s Community Standards and Instagram’s Community Guidelines. “We love you. You’re very special” in the first post and “great patriots” and “remember this day forever” in the second post violated Facebook’s rules prohibiting praise or support of people engaged in violence.

The Board found that, in maintaining an unfounded narrative of electoral fraud and persistent calls to action, Mr. Trump created an environment where a serious risk of violence was possible. At the time of Mr. Trump’s posts, there was a clear, immediate risk of harm and his words of support for those involved in the riots legitimized their violent actions. As president, Mr. Trump had a high level of influence. The reach of his posts was large, with 35 million followers on Facebook and 24 million on Instagram.

Given the seriousness of the violations and the ongoing risk of violence, Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts on January 6 and extending that suspension on January 7.

However, it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose an ‘indefinite’ suspension.

It is not permissible for Facebook to keep a user off the platform for an undefined period, with no criteria for when or whether the account will be restored.

In applying this penalty, Facebook did not follow a clear, published procedure. ‘Indefinite’ suspensions are not described in the company’s content policies. Facebook’s normal penalties include removing the violating content, imposing a time-bound period of suspension, or permanently disabling the page and account.

It is Facebook’s role to create necessary and proportionate penalties that respond to severe violations of its content policies. The Board’s role is to ensure that Facebook’s rules and processes are consistent with its content policies, its values and its human rights commitments.

In applying a vague, standardless penalty and then referring this case to the Board to resolve, Facebook seeks to avoid its responsibilities. The Board declines Facebook’s request and insists that Facebook apply and justify a defined penalty.

GOP outrage that Trump isn’t allowed to lie, but they want to cancel Liz Cheney for speaking the truth.

Man I’m glad that’s not my party. They’re just embarrassing.

I just realized I used the wrong ‘allowed’
Apparently I can’t make the correction two days later?

I fixed it. You have 12 hours to edit or delete posts, which is actually a little long.

Two reasons for it, the first being so spammers can't make a normal looking post and then go back a few days later and add a bunch of links to their fake Rolex business. The other is so people can't get in a snit and go back later and edit and remove posts and screw up the threads' continuity.

What was the deal they tried to build suspense or something? It was and is a yawner for me. I sort of boycotted FB ever since they were so sloppy and facilitated Russia attacking us. Makes no difference to me.

Huge deal for somebody in the public eye, though. It's like a TV show that 90+% of households watch, many multiple times a day, and that has the ability to reach all of its audience or to micro-target ads and promoted posts down just about to the color of shoes people are wearing. Yuge blunder managing to get himself kicked out all of the leading platforms, but especially Facebook.

Related.
Facebook is scrambling to prevent Starbucks from leaving its platform after the world’s largest coffee company said it was dismayed by hateful comments left on its posts about racial and social justice issues.

In internal discussions seen by BuzzFeed News, Facebook employees who manage the social network’s relationship with Starbucks wrote that the company has become so frustrated by the hate and intolerance on the platform that it may remove its Facebook page. Were Starbucks to do so, it would be one of the largest companies ever to sever ties with Facebook.

“Starbucks is in the process of evaluating their organic presence on FB, and whether they should continue to have a presence on the platform at all,” a Facebook employee wrote to their colleagues earlier this week. “Anytime they post (organically) in regards to social issues or their mission & values work (e.g. BLM, LGBTQ, sustainability/climate change, etc.) they are overwhelmed by negative/insensitive, hate speech related comments on their posts.”

The employee went on to note that Starbucks’s community management team has struggled to moderate hateful responses and is unable to disable comments on their page. They also relayed a series of questions from Starbucks management, which sought to understand how Facebook’s algorithms moderated or amplified comments on posts.

Well as I stated I'm not involved with FB at all. But I reject and resist the efforts to regulate speech too much on any platform. Beyond violence and enabling violence I'd say FB should stand firm. It's a very slippery slope down the censorship slide.

I was being snarky about the “only two days”. I’m surprised it allows more than 2 minutes to edit mistakes.

LOL I fixed "minuets" too.

Yeah, it should be more like 3 to 6 hours. I'm not likely to catch changes at 12 hours.
