This Week’s Most Interesting Football Games

Post by RedPillWonderland »

Mission v Poly is usually a good public school battle, and should be an even fight this year.

Jackrabbits have been dealing with some injuries, but at full strength I’d take them in a close game.

Sierra Canyon v Centennial is the best game in the state this week. Hopefully it’s not cleat-melting hot at Cathedral Catholic in the late Saturday afternoon like it always is at the Honor Bowl. Bring some wet towels and a pop up tent or some beach umbrellas if you plan on attending that one in person.

Here we go with this schedule filler game for Bosco that Amat decided to take along with the upcoming date against Servite.

Amat quick 3 and out to start the game. Bosco started 3 defensive linemen and 2 linebackers with 6 DBs. DL is 5-9 238 lb junior Jailen Perkins (surprise starter with Nate Burrell out), along with seniors Malachi Finau and Jairus Satele. Matayo Uiagalelei does not start on defense tonight, but does start at TE, where he only has 1 catch on the season. Matayo was the best player on the team in the spring but this fall he has honestly often looked winded (or disinterested) playing both ways. Seems to be in questionable shape. Junior Jonathan Hardy starts at linebacker tonight (has played well this year), playing next to fellow junior Deven Bryant.

Ty Lee and Riz Hala start as hybrid safety/OLBs, with BC commit Hala walked up as a DE - at 6-2 195 lbs (will Chris King start this group against MD?? Or are they experimenting?). Peyton Woodyard and RJ Jones are the deep safeties, and Marcelles Williams and JShawn Frausto Ramos are at the corners.

Bosco starts Katin Houser at QB, who had the hot hand last week against Alemany. Jabari Bates starts at RB with Speedy Luke and Mikey Hayes in full uniform but out (injured? rest?) tonight. Normal offensive group otherwise for SJB.

After a few completions to Chedon James (who is quietly becoming SJB’s #1 WR and killing teams this season) and a couple runs by Bates, Houser keeps a zone read off the left side and runs in about a 15 yard TD. 7-0 Braves, about 8m 1Q.

After Amat punts again without reaching midfield, Pierce Clarkson takes a series. Bosco tries to get the passing game going, but Pierce continues his struggles from last week. He almost throws an interception on 2nd down before Bosco’s Bates runs for 15 and gets the 1st, off an Earnest Greene block. It’s called back due to a hold and Bosco eventually has to punt. Not a good start for Pierce.

Amat gets its running game going and moves out near midfield before attempting to go deep to Delano Franklin and throwing a pick to senior and demoted former starter Tay Beasley. Good moment for him as his teammates mob him on the sideline. SJB Ball, 7-0, under 4m in the first.

Houser back at QB, but it’s a penalty fest for the Braves tonight. A long gain on the ground by Bates is called back due to another hold, and then a long screen pass gain is called back due to illegal man downfield and a personal foul. Combo of poor CIFSS Officiating and undisciplined Bosco play. Bosco has to punt again from its own 35, but Amat muffs it and Bosco gets it back again at about the Amat 30 with 2:20 left 1Q.

Pierce Clarkson takes over and hands to Jabari Bates who weaves his way through the Amat defense down near the 10. 1 play later Clarkson hits Matayo for his first TD of the season on an easy slant/crossing route. Bosco seems to either purposely attempt a 2 point pass to Matayo or bobbled the snap, couldn’t tell.

Either way, doesn’t work and it’s 13-0 Bosco with 1m left in the 1Q.

Amat goes 3 and out again, punts out to only the Bosco 38. After the quarter ends and they change ends, Houser throws down to about the 11 on a pass to Logan Booher. A couple plays later, Jabari Bates scoots in for a touchdown. Bosco playing at scrimmage pace, half asleep.

Braves kicking game woes continue, as Marcus Lee missed The EP. Bosco 19-0, 11m left.

RB Aiden Ramos of Amat is running HARD, and busts some Bosco heads on a few carries to get out near midfield. SJB’s Malachi Finau sacks Tobin ODell on 3rd down to force another Amat punt.

Another Pierce Clarkson drive results in a 3 and out including a 3rd down incompletion intended for Booher. Not a great night so far for Pierce. Punt for Bosco to the Amat 30, about 7m left 1st half.

Another Amat drive to nowhere ends with another punt after a silly post play personal foul moves the ball back to their own 30 and forces 3rd and 30.

A couple plays later, one of the Bosco QBs (I think Houser) hands off to Bates and he goes around left side untouched for the first 50 yards off another Greene block, then shakes and bounces off 3 defenders to bang into the endzone for about a 75 yard TD. Crazy good run, Jabari Bates is team MVP through the first 3 games. 26-0 Bosco about 4:30 left.

By the way Rayshon Luke is running on the field to celebrate tonight you’d think he was good to go. Almost disrespectful for Bosco to be holding out healthy players tonight against Amat, including 2 of their 3 running backs. Basically their version of NBA load management.

Amat goes in a 9 play drive for 75 yards in 3 minutes to make it 26-7 with :55 left 1st half.

Bosco had 3-4 penalties on that drive including a personal foul that kept the drive alive after a huge hit on the sideline by RJ Jones. A pass interference in the end zone by former starter and current nickel back Jaxon Harley moves the ball inside the 5. Amat then throws a slant for a touchdown. Jason Negro is fed up with the amount of penalties in the first half and let’s the refs hear about it.

Pierce Clarkson uses the last minute of the half to have his best drive in 2 weeks. Runs for about 30 yards out past midfield, then actually completes a couple passes to Jahlil McClain and Chedon James. The drive then stalls around the 15 and Bosco decides to try a FG with embattled kicker Marcus Lee. It’s blocked, and the Braves special teams concerns continue. The Amat crowd goes wild in a representation of the term “moral victory” - a long TD drive followed by a bend but don’t break defensive stand in the last 55 seconds. The announcer says Amat takes “momentum” into the half lol.

Halftime - Bosco up 26-7 in a yawner.

For those interested in Bosco’s use of their never ending personnel, they continue to play a HUGE amount of players, especially on defense.

They’ve probably rotated in a total of 20 players on defense, including the following backup DBs on top of the 6 DBs they started (My note: RJ Jones, Ty Lee and Peyton Woodyard are playing really well at safety this year so far): CB Tay Beasley, nickel back Jaxon Harley, CB Elias Archie. Have not seen JSerra transfer Hunter Nowell play anything but special teams.

Former safety Ryan Tuaolo is now a backup OLB and rotates in with the 2nd team, along with sophomore ILB Khmori House and junior LB Medrick Burnett. Star LB and UCLA commit Jalen Woods is also being held out tonight.

Matayo Uiagalelei has rotated in as a backup DL (a mystery what is going on with him, he was their best DL by far in the spring), along with 5-9 230 lb freshman DT Max Amasio; junior backup DL Vertonio Weatherton appears to also be out tonight.

The offensive lineup for the Braves is pretty static:

QBs - Houser (starter) and Clarkson
RB - Only Bates tonight with Luke and Hayes being held out (no sight of sophomores Boogie Sylvester or Khalil Warren in the 1st half)
WR - James, Booher, Doss, McClain
TE - Uiagalelei
LT- E. Greene III
LG - Sean Haney
C. - Mc. Talavou
RG - Rotation between sophomore starter King Large and junior 2020 LB Poly transfer Tueni Melalipi
RT - Tyson Molio’o

Have not seen a lot of WR rotation tonight, but usually St Bernard transfer Zacharyus Williams would get reps a long with junior Lucas Reynoso, who reportedly (per Negro) had a great offseason.

Bosco gets the ball first in the 2nd half. Katin Houser starts it. Jabari Bates bangs it out on a few carries to the -45, has to have 150 yards rushing. Soph Boogie Sylvester gets his first snaps tonight to give Jabari a blow, and Houser completes a couple quick throws to Matayo and Booher. Then another post play penalty on God knows what moves Bosco back to about its own 40.

Just an opportunity for them to go deep and make a big play; Houser drops back and throws a strike to Chedon James who breaks a Delano Franklin tackle and stumbles in for a 60 yard TD. 33-7 for a sloppy Bosco team with 9:08 3Q.

Chedon James and Jabari Bates have been unexpected stars for this Bosco offense, outshining the 4 and 5 star recruits surrounding them.

I can’t keep track of all the Bosco penalties but suffice it to say there were 4-5 more on this drive including another 2 personal fouls. One was after a sack by senior captain and Naval Academy commit Jairus Satele where he popped up, faced the Amat fans and gave them the Johnny Manziel “money fingers” right next to the ref, who threw a flag immediately lol. They have to be approaching 200 yards in penalties.

Amat completed a 3rd down 40 yard pass to Aidan Ramos on the drive, past the coverage of Riz Hala. After a series of penalties put Amat inside the 5, Bosco made a goalline stand on 4th down with a Jaxon Harley pass breakup on a pass intended for WR Kalau. Kalau gets angry and rips Harley’s helmet off, getting himself ejected with 4:30 remaining 3Q.

Bosco still up 33-7. This is a chippy, eventful blowout.

Pierce Clarkson lines up next to Boogie Sylvester, and Steven Lo gives Boogie a couple carries. After another Clarkson incompletion and a run left, Clarkson finds no one open, keeps the play alive, and rips the Amat defense for a 50 yard completion to Jahlil McClain down to the 6 yard line (who has made a smooth transition this year back to his natural position of Wr). Jabari Bates literally jogs up the middle untouched on the next play - looks like Amat has tapped out.

40-7 Bosco 1:30 left 3Q.

Amat fumbles the kickoff and Ty Lee recovers. Amat is ready to head back to La Puente.

The backups are in en masse. 5 play drive led by Katin Houser ends in a Boogie Sylvester TD (I think his first career TD). 47-7 Bosco with 1M left 3Q.

Running clock drips down and Bosco wins a snoozer at 47-7. I predicted it would match the frosh score; missed by one point. The Hagerty/Negro handshake is a long arm stiffy and cold as a storage freezer; not a lot of love shared between the coaching staffs either (could be reading too much into it, but if you haven’t followed the board commentary today, there were some unflattering (albeit mostly true) things said by Hagerty about Bosco’s program last year; postgame handshake line was probably the most interesting 20 seconds of this matchup).

Interesting backup lineup notes for Bosco:

Freshman Matai Jefferson was in late at LT; the giant 9th grader is supposedly the next Bosco OL star and the heir apparent to Earnest Greene. Not sure on his holdback status, but looked a little too heavy to me if he is truly 14 years old (6-4 329 lb listed height weight); will battle and is aggressive though. One to watch.

Carson native and Sophomore QB Caleb Sanchez got his first career snaps. Big sturdy kid, listed at 6-3 213; nothing wrong with his arm. Zipping that thing.

Junior backup TE Nehemiah Sagiao took most of the snaps in the 2nd half in place of Matayo at TE. Caught a couple passes from Sanchez. Also plays DE. One of those kids that would be a star at a lesser Trinity school. Or at Amat.

Hunter Nowell finally got in with the 3rd teamers and looked good against Amat’s starters. Defeated a stiff arm attempt and threw a RB out of bounds on a tackle. Wasted talent, good player who went from starting at JSerra last spring to 3rd string and a kickoff team guy for Bosco; should be starting somewhere and playing 60 meaningful defensive snaps a game, namely at his old school. But I digress. I’m sure he’ll get more tick next season when Bosco graduates 4 of their army of DBs.

Missed note from earlier … defensive backups who got snaps for the Braves in the regular Goal line package (before garbage time): 5-10 305 senior DL Joseph Pataolo; sophomore LB Laighton Scott, 6-1 215; senior LB Manu Taula 5-10 196. Bosco is really small on the backup DLine group. Like fire hydrant small. No idea what’s wrong with Cal Berkeley commit Nate Burrell, hope he is healthy.

Bosco was missing a notable amount of starters/key players tonight - POWER 5 recruits - and still beat Bishop Amat of the Mission League by 40 points … with a running clock for the last 13 min of game time. Think on that.

Other notes: Not sure what is up with 6-3 307 lb Garces HS transfer and DLineman Su’a Lefotu. He would have had to move here from Bakersfield, so I don’t know why CIF would hold up that transfer. Maybe he’s injured. Will be a heck of a Trinity Lg addition for the second half if he is healthy, especially with the questionable depth on the SJB d-line. Also unsure what happened to Bosco senior backup DL Shiloh Travis. Hasn’t played all Season. Having said that, Jairus Satele and Malachi Finau are playing their tails off this fall so far and will be forces to be reckoned with in the trenches this season.

Man, this MV - Poly game is abysmal. These are two really bad teams. I guess MV is less horrible, but damn these programs have fallen off massively.

I was at the Mission v Servite game, saw this team up close; outside of a solid passing game, this is not a typically good Diablo team. They would lose to the 2019 MV team by 2 touchdowns. They are still good enough to dominate everyone in the South Coast league other than San Clemente, but they are not a D1 playoff team. If this Mission team beat Poly by 27 points with Poly’s talent level, then Poly may need a new coaching staff.

Poly does not look very talented, especially on offense, they were a mess. Poly would lose to Olu.

MV may have trouble with SC and SJH. The Alemany game will be telling, they have some dudes.

Speaking of messes, Stallions are 0-3 with a blowout loss to SM, and losses to Cypress last week and Roosevelt this week. Games against undefeateds Yorba Linda and CdM coming up in the next 2 weeks. They may be 0-5 going into league play. Not seeing MV having any problems with them. I took the cheese on SJH this summer with all those WRs. Not looking rosy down in the Badlands. Coach Frith needs a hug right now.

Not a flawless victory by Cen10 if you watched it and Sierra Canyon is far from a great team. But I gotta give credit where it’s due.

123, that was right on the nose; head to Vegas, NFL starts next week, you’re on a heater …
