Back in 1986...

Post by WillyCfromSHS »

The LA TIMES OC Top 10 - Oct. 21, 1986

This is crazy...look at the Top 4 ahead of the likes of Servite, Edison and Mater Dei nowhere to be found.

You change a couple rules and we'd be back to this in a heartbeat.

1. El Toro (South Coast) 6-0

2. Saddleback (Sea View) 6-0

3. Loara (Empire) 5-0-1

4. Santa Ana (Century) 5-1

5. Los Alamitos (Empire) 5-1

6. Esperanza (Empire) 4-1-1

7. Servite (Angelus) 4-2

8. Sunny Hills (Freeway) 6-0

9. Valencia (Orange) 4-1-1

10. Edison (Sunset) 4-2

Others receiving votes: Tustin (5-1), Foothill (4-2), Westminster (3-2-1), Troy (5-1), Laguna Beach (6-0) and Capistrano Valley (4-2).

Mater Dei nowhere to be found

The '80s were largely forgettable for MD football...the Monarchs were 4-2 at that point (losses to Santa Ana & Edison) on their way to a 5-5 finish.

Well, c'mon, don't just leave us hangin'!

With all due respect, Willy, if you think "changing a couple rules" would put Saddleback, Loara and Santa Ana back on top of Orange County football, I have to question your understanding of the game.

The 70's and 80's of MD sports was interesting. MD used to be in the LA Diocese and was
transferred to the OC Diocese in 1976. A lot of transition was going on for the next ten
years or so, the MD administrations during this time were not, how should I put this,
into the sports scene that much, and promoted the school as an academic school with
sports being a minor extracurricular activity the administration had to put up with, all in
all the school did a decent job on the sports scene, the basketball team under McKnight
was a national power from the mid 80's on, other sports did well also, but it's football
in general that people look at, first sport of the HS season and all that..

,,after Dick Coury and Bob Woods left the FB program, the administration hired some
yahoo's to head the program, a couple in particular should never had been hired, one
even changed the FB helmets and took the three stripes away!

The next two HC's were mediocre and stabilized the FB program . Rollinson was an
assistant coach for a time under one the HC's and said with the talent we have, we
should not be losing the games we do. I'll leave it at that.

MD Dad - No I understand demographics sir - I am not saying it would Saddleback, Loara, etc back in the Top 10 in the county, I'm saying the publics would have better representation, better talent to compete. The likes of say an Los Al, Edison, Mission Viejo, San Juan Hills, Capo Valley, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, Foothill etc. could be #1-4.

Note: Rule Changes to follow. I have to make a living right now. Lol.

Can't wait to hear the proposed rule changes so we can have "WOKE" high school football.

In the 80's Santa Ana still had two youth football leagues (JAA and Pop Warner), intermediate school sports league, and multiple little leagues. Then you have coaches like Dick Hill and Jerry Witte. Valley had three or four DI dudes and never made the playoffs. Talent all over the place until folks started moving to Moreno Valley and Corona.

Possible Rules Scenarios

• CIFSS Transfer Committee - 5 private league ADs, 5 public league ADs, 5 CIF Officials will rule monthly on transfers that will rule on transfers that are rejected then appealed, change of address transfers for public schools by children of military personnel, public to private transfer, private to public transfers. Simple majority 8+ votes determine eligibility.

• 5 athletic scholarships per sport/per level (20 total annually) for private schools, not greater than 50% of annual tuition. Random audits of parochial schools to ensure compliance. Audit consists of proof of payment of tuition by scholarship and non-scholarship players.

• Private to Private transfers – 1-year suspension of varsity play.

• Public to Private transfers -1-year suspension of varsity play.

• Private to Public transfer - no penalty if attending in-district school but must be reviewed/approved by Transfer Committee.

• Public to Public transfer – 1 – year suspension of varsity play unless US military relocation hardship is approved.

• All players must list parents/ guardians, address of residence on a required CIF form and random audits will be conducted to ensure compliance.

• Any audit findings that are proven illegal will result in school forfeiting all games in which player participated and school will not be eligible for upcoming playoff participation. If proven illegal after the season, school will be deemed ineligible for post season play in the upcoming season.

• Open District school must adhere to same protocols

This is a "couple of rule changes"? Who has the money for additional personnel
to oversee this? Who has the personnel and money to enforce it? Dream on..

Let's review:

What you've posted is hardly the changing of a couple rules...it's basically creating a whole new infrastructure designed solely to discriminate against & handicap private school athletes

I feel like I've seen that before...I'm curious, where did you copy & paste that from?

If any of this goes through the privates will leave and start their own sanctioning body. Also look for exponential growth in club programs (save football)-especially in basketball.

The privates have created this landscape and it will take drastic measures to get back to a level playing field.

Yes, that could be a result of this which would be IMO the best route moving forward. Texas is a great example. https://texasprivateschools.org/

There are two (the Jesuit HS's in Dallas/Houston) private schools in UIL. Both play 6A football (with lesser enrollments than the publics they play against), both on strict rules as to recruitment/transfers. They are far from dominant and struggle to make the playoffs. As for TAPPS-the best teams are not competitive with top public programs.

1985 Pre-Season Top 10
1. Edison- Kaleaph Carter
2. El Modena
3. Servite
4. Valencia- Ray Pallares
5. Foothill
6. Mission Viejo
7. Fountain Valley
8. Newport Harbor
9. Pacifica
10. Mater Dei

Not sure how it ended up that year. But it was my senior year and we scored a huge upset over Valencia who had a team with many D1 prosepects. And we shut Pallares down!

We knocked Valencia out of the playoffs that year in 85 and won the Central Conference. I had to battle Joe Garten (Colorado 2x All American) all game. Dude was a damn stud. Pallares wasn't even the best back on the field that night. Glen Campbell was. We also beat La Habra 2x that year...they had Chuck Weatherspoon. Also beat Santa Ana HS who won a title that year who had RB Robert E. Lee. And we beat La Quinta in the finals who had all everything Bart Rectenwald. We finished #2 in the County behind Edison that year.

Good times them there days RR..., We (CDM) took up where you left off, losing to Valencia in CIF Semi's 1987, beating them for the CIF Championship in 1988 (Revenge), then taking out LaQuinta in 1989 for the "Back to Back" chips.....
